On Sunday, Ian Rapoport reported that the Miami Dolphins had signed former Patriots’ first-round pick Isaiah Wynn. Well, this is interesting. Wynn endured perhaps the worst year of his entire football career in 2022 with the New England Patriots, and it quickly become obvious that the team did not plan on re-signing the player.

The former Georgia product was a 2018 first-round pick and did have some valid concerns about playing tackle at the next level. When he was on the field at left tackle, Wynn was effective.

He didn’t play at all during his rookie season because of a torn Achilles. Due to more injuries after that, he played in just eight games in 2019, his second year in the NFL, and 10 games in 2020, his third year.

He did put it all together for a bit during his fourth season in 2021, playing in 16 games, but everything seemed to have crashed down on him in 2022, playing in just nine games across the offensive line and showing a rough patch of play at right tackle.

At this point, Wynn is not a starting-caliber right tackle, and the Miami Dolphins have Terron Armstead at their left tackle spot. What makes this signing even more interesting is that the Dolphins don’t have much at their right tackle spot between Wynn and Austin Jackson, so the former Patriot might have a clear path to start.

Wynn can be an effective interior player, and I do think that if he ends up sticking in Miami, he’ll stick along the offensive interior. Either way, it’s clear that Isaiah Wynn and the New England Patriots needed to move in a different direction, and Wynn signing with a Patriots’ rival just makes a ton of sense.

Maybe in return, the Pats can sign a 2022 Miami Dolphins’ current free agent to try and get back at them a bit. I am not expecting Isaiah Wynn to make much noise at right tackle for the Dolphins, but I think he can be effective along the interior.
