Hаyden Weѕneѕkі to Trірle-A, аnd More Cubѕ Roѕter Moveѕ

The Chicago Cubs are shaking things up leading into their three-game series against the Houston Astros. After a brutal series loss to the Minnesota Twins over Mother’s Day weekend, the Cubs need a spark, especially in the form of pitching.

On Monday, the Cubs recalled a pair of bullpen arms, RHP Jeremiah Estrada and RHP Nick Burdi. In order to make room for the pair, the Cubs placed RHP Brad Boxberger on the 15-day IL and sent RHP Hayden Wesneski to Triple-A Iowa.

Estrada has already been with the Cubs in 2023. In his brief stint, he pitched in three games without allowing a run. He struck out six batters and walked three in four total innings of work. At Triple-A Iowa, Estrada owns a 0.96 ERA in eight appearances. He has fanned 12 batters and walked four in 9.1 innings of work.

As for Burdi, he has spent the entirety of the 2023 campaign with Triple-A Iowa. In Iowa, Burdi owns a 3.38 ERA and four saves in 10.2 innings of work. In his 11 appearances, he also owns a beautiful 19-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Burdi will likely get plenty of look in his time with the Cubs due to inconsistent performances and the injuries.

As for Boxberger, he is struggling. Some fans are calling for an end to the experiment, as the veteran isn’t performing as well as he did in 2022. With a 5.52 ERA in 17 appearances, Boxberger has 13 strikeouts, but nine walks. In addition, his underlying figures are not blowing anyone away in the majors.

Hayden Wesneski has also had his struggles over the course of the season. After a handful of strong performances, Saturday’s seven earned-run performance once again inflated his ERA. Across eight starts, Wesneski is 2-2 with a 5.03 ERA in 39.1 innings of work. Although he has struck out 28 batters and only walked nine, Wesneski has given up 10 home runs and 22 total earned runs. The youngster still has some things to work on before he will likely stick in the majors full-time.

The injuries continue to pile up as well. Although he hasn’t graced the major-league roster yet, RHP Adrian Sampson was transferred to the 60-day IL. Now, the Cubs’ starting pitching depth is thinning.

What’s On Tap Next?

With Wesneski’s demotion, the Cubs will likely either use a spot starter, possibly skip a start due to the number of upcoming off days, or recall Kyle Hendricks, who has looked really good in his last two rehab starts, in the near future. The Cubs’ pitching strategy over the coming days will be something to monitor.

The Cubs open a three-game set with the Astros on Monday. Following the series, the Cubs are off again on Thursday before a weekend series with the Philadelphia Phillies. Monday will then grace the team with another off day before returning to Wrigley Field for nine straight games.
